Gun Dischard Laws, Owens Cross Road, Al?

I just bought my first rifle so I'm not accustomed to the MULTITUDE of regulations regarding the discharge of a weapon. I live in a very rural area, I would definitely call it country, in a town called Owens Cross Roads in Alabama. I don't live in a neighborhood per say its more a collection of a couple houses somewhat near each other. My house in on the bottom of a mountain and the land extends pretty far up the mountain at which point it is publicly owned land. I want to know if I can shoot my gun in the woods behind my house. And if so what animals are off limits when not in season. Am I safe shooting things like squirrels? I would appreciate some links, preferably give me a laymen overview of the sourc because all the documents I've found are like trying to read lawyer contracts. Impossible.
